[ARCHIVED] HARRISON IS A FUN PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER

The Harrison Recreation Commission enhances and improves the quality of living in Harrison. Through events and activities, the commission creates a culture that fosters good will, neighborly exchange and family enjoyment. Thanks to these volunteers and their sponsors, Harrison is a fun place to be for summer 2022.

CONCERT SERIES KICKS OFF

Harrison families and friends—armed with lawn chairs and canned goods for the Harrison Mayor’s Community Fund—met at the Harrison Community Center June 7 for live music and more.

With the band Happiness Jones rocking in the background, kids cooled off in a steady spray provided by the Harrison Fire Department. The aroma of grilled burgers, hot dogs, brats and metts wafted from the food tent. Many hands were occupied with cold beer and shaved ice.

While the crowd comprised all ages and many walks of life, they all seemed to have one thing in common: they were having a great time.

There are still three events in the Harrison Summer Concert Series Lineup:

June 21 - Model Behavior

July 12 - Naked Karate Girls

July 26 - Amy Sailor Band

The Harrison Summer Concert Series is made possible by Harrison Recreation Commission and FCN Bank. Food Tent Sponsors are El Mariachi Mexican Cantina, Todd Bischoff of Bischoff Realty, Gypsy Wagon Print Company and Rehage Landscaping.

FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION PLANNED

The Recreation Commission has also been busy coordinating the City’s annual Fourth of July celebration.

Led by Grand Marshal Mike Dole, the Fourth of July parade will commence at 4 p.m. in historic downtown Harrison. A lifelong Harrison resident, Dole retired from the City’s Streets Department with 22 years of service. He continues to volunteer and serve as an integral contributor to the success of Harrison’s community’s events. He coached Harrison Youth Football for 30 years and is an active parishioner at St. John the Baptist church. Along with his wife Risa, Dole raised three children, Ethan, Lexis and Tanner. Ethan and Lexis have both served on City Council.

Following the parade at 5 p.m., family-friendly festivities are planned at the community center. Food, drinks and adult beverages will be available to purchase. Free activities include a stilt walker, magician, face painting, balloon sculpting, caricature artists, games, prizes. There will be a cornhole tournament at 6 p.m. and live music by The Renegades at 7 p.m. Fireworks will start at dusk.

Groups wishing to participate in the Fourth of July parade must complete an application linked here.

More recreation events, City meetings and more are provided on the City Calendar.
